
Is I or O on or off?
As technology became more ubiquitous, these English words were replaced with the symbols line "|" for "on" and circle "◯" for "off" (typically without serifs) to bypass language barriers. This standard is still used on toggle power switches, sometimes in the format "I/O".
Is 0 or 1 on or off?
1 or | means on. The power-off symbol, as per IEC 60417-5008, on a button or toggle, indicates that using the control will disconnect power to the device. 0 or ◯ means off.
How to tell if a switch is on or off?
Look for common design features like symbols ("I" for on; "O" for off) and colored markings. Observe physical positions—typically up/on; down/off. Check integrated LED lights—illuminated usually means "on."
Why is 0 off and 1 on?
Binary is either one (1) or zero (0). In the electronic state, a one is expressed as the presence of a specific voltage level such as 5V. A zero is expressed as that voltage being at or actually near zero (less than 0.7V. In universal terms a 1 is therefore considered “ON” and a 0 is considered “OFF”.
